Modern EU-Russia relations

General information

The main aim of this school is to improve students’ knowledge in the area of international relations, as well as learning of new trends of Russia-UR relations, Russian studies and Russian language learning focusing on the Karelian regional features.

The objectives are

— To provide students with knowledge about Russian history, Russian political and economic systems, Russian foreign policy, EU-Russia relations and cross-border cooperation

-To visit departments and get acquainted with experts involved in development of cooperation between Karelia, Northern Europe and the European Union

-To improve students’ knowledge of Russian language

-To visit Karelian places of interest

-To provide culture and knowledge exchange through communication and education

The content and programme of the school corresponds to the overall objective and objectives. The school presupposes interactive lectures, presentations, study visit, debates, meetings with experts and cultural programme. The total amount of hours makes up 144 academic hours. The number of ECTS is 4.

Within the framework of the school students get knowledge on 4 blocks:

1) History of Russia and the Republic of Kare
2) Russian political and economic systems and foreign policy.
3) EU-Russia relations and cross-border cooperation with special focus on Karelian (Euroregio Karelia)
4) Russian language course.

First block  will include lectures on various stages of Russian history with focus on modern Russian history. It will also cover the main points of the Karelian history and formation of the Republic of Karelia. In this block students are to choose the event in the Russian history that is the most interesting for them and to make presentation about it.

Second block will be devoted to description of the political and economic system of Russia, foreign policy institutions as well as foreign policy of Russia in various areas and in relation to different major actors of the international scene. It also presupposes meeting with head of Society “Karelia-Germany” and representative of Petrozavodsk City Administration. Students will get information from the official representative of Russia and ask him questions that are interesting for them.

Third block is aimed to provide students with knowledge on the history and current situation in the EU-Russia relations as well as the specificity of cross-border cooperation. The study visit to the Barents EU Centre will be organized.

The EU Centre in Barents Region was found on the basis of the EU Information Centre of Petrozavodsk State University in December 2011. The Centre unites 5 leading universities of Barents Region, namely Petrozavodsk State University, Murmansk State Technical University, International Institute of Business Education, Syktyvkar State University, as well as North (Arctic) Federal University.

Its overall objective is to improve overall awareness and knowledge among lecturers, students, officials, CSIs and general public in the Barents area of Russia on EU related issues. Main Activities include gathering, exchange and spreading of the information on the EU; implementation of conferences and seminars; support of the research and educational cooperation on the study of the EU; creation of educational programmes, study courses on the EU history, EU member-states; training of lecturers and staff members of organizations that cooperate with the EU; preparation of publications; assistance in the implementation of students’ and lecturers’ exchange; provision of consulting services on the opportunities of academic mobility and project activity.

This visit will give students the possibility not only to get theoretical knowledge, but to get information about practical issues on how the EU stimulates research and education in the Republic of Karelia and the Barents region of Russia.

The part of the third block will be debates “The EU-Russia relations” during which every participant will make a presentation on his/her point of view in relation to the topic. After it other participants will ask questions and discuss the material. These debates will enable students to develop their skills of analysis, argumentation, public speech and discussion.

The practical part also include meeting with representatives of business structures who are directly engaged in conducting cross-border cooperation of the republic and establishing new contacts. As a result students will know the features of cross-border cooperation and study Karelian experience.

Fourth block presupposes learning of the Russian language. The number of academic hours of the language course will amount to 45. Students will be divided into 3 groups taking into account their level of knowledge: 1) beginners level and 2) intermediate level  3)advanced level. The Standard Russian language courses will give beginners, as well as advanced students, the necessary skills in Russian for practical use. Emphasis is put on the basis of grammar and conversation. Intermediate and advanced students will have the opportunity of improving their command in both oral and written language. The courses are developed in interesting and attractive manner and students get fast progress.

The language content of the school is aimed to provide knowledge and skills that will be useful for students in general and take into account Russian and Karelian specifics. Students will be able to use them in their future educational and professional life.

Students are expected to apply max June  1, 2018, 12 PM CET but dates are very flexible and school can be organised during the whole summer depending on group.

You will be able to select from  36 possible cultural events in Petrozavodsk and the Republic of Karelia
Cultural programme is provided every day including holidays.
